Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Scam

At 10.55am on 22 August 2024, I received a call from a purported officer from Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on my mum's phone number. I have my mum's phone number because I had to change her SIM card a few months ago. The caller's number is 019 204 1937.

He claimed that my mum's number was detected gambling in Kelantan. Neither my mum nor myself have been to Kelantan. And I don't gamble and my mum is too old to learn how to gamble. The scammer said that I have to call back the number within one hour or my number would be terminated. The strange thing was the scammer asked things like was I driving, who was in the car with me, etc. I hung up.

A few hours later, I checked the phone and was surprised to see "no network detected" message and I couldn't call or receive calls on that phone. I restarted the phone but still got the same message.

On 23 August 2024, my wife and I went to the service provider to check if the number was terminated. The staff said the number was still active. She suggested switching the SIM card into my wife's phone. Then, the SIM card in my wife's phone worked. But, when the SIM card was put back into the other phone, the SIM card suddenly could make calls but could not receive calls. So, the staff said that the phone with my mum's SIM card was spoilt.

On 24 August, we tried calling my mum's number in the "spoilt" phone again. It worked. Now, it could make and receive calls.

So, if you receive such calls, don't panic. It's a scam. Why did the phone go haywire after that, I have no idea.
